Enjoy VAT-Free Shopping in Portugal

Travellers who reside outside the European Union can benefit from VAT exemption on purchases made in Portugal, provided certain conditions are met. This makes shopping in Portugal even more attractive, whether you are buying fashion, jewellery, electronics or local products.

Who is eligible for VAT exemption?

To qualify for VAT-free shopping in Portugal, you must:

  • Be a resident outside the European Union
  • Purchase goods for personal use only, with no commercial purpose
  • Spend a minimum of 50 € per invoice, excluding VAT
  • Leave the European Union with the purchased goods in your personal luggage no later than the end of the third month following the month of purchase

At the time of purchase

When making your purchase, present your passport or another official document proving your residence outside the EU. This allows the retailer to register your purchase under the e-Taxfree Portugal system.

At the airport before departure

After check-in and before leaving Portugal, go to the customs area at the airport and use one of the electronic terminals (kiosks). Make sure you have with you:

  • The identification document used at the time of purchase
  • Your boarding pass

You should also ensure that you carry:

  • The registration receipt
  • The purchased goods, unused and in new condition
  • The corresponding invoices
